Heat Wave

Melting Yet?

Here are some helpful hints to keep your house and yourself cool during the hot streak:

  • Open windows at night to keep in the cool then shut in the cool and pull drapes and curtains to keep out the sun during the day. Be aware of the temperature inside and outside and open and close windows and doors accordingly
  • Fans. Utilize all your fans. Heat rises, so put your fans on the up switch so the hot gets pulled up.
  • Drink plenty of water, ice tea, and other cold beverages, but some say soup does the trick. Sipping something hot can actually cool you off.
  • Make a DIY air conditioner by positioning a shallow pan or bowl (a roasting pan works nicely) full of ice in front of a fan. The breeze will pick up cold water from the ice’s surface as it melts, creating a cooling mist.
  • Get your hair wet and let it drip dry. Even in the heat, this will cool your head and make you more comfortable.
  • Get loose. Loose clothing. Cotton is best and keeps it loose and comfy
  • Check your pulse. Apply cold compresses to your pressure points. Sounds weird, but it actually works quite effectively.
  • Sleep alone. Forgo the snuggling until the heat passes.
  • Get low. Basements or lower floors of the house stay cooler due to the heat rising.
  • Hang a cold wet sheet in front of an open window. The breeze blowing through it will quickly bring down the room temperature.
  • Pamper yourself with dinner out or a cold sandwich or salad. Leave the oven off!
  • Give your toes a treat. Feet are very sensitive to temperature, so give them a chilling bath.
  • Camp at home. Pitch a tent on the porch or in the backyard and pretend you are a kid again.
  • Be creative. Fill a sock with rice, put it in the freezer, then use as a cold compress.
  • And Remember, please always check on your elderly neighbors and loved ones. Seniors have a harder time regulating their body temperature and are more susceptible to heatstroke.
